Is That Just a Bug Bite? How to Know When It’s Something More

Why should tourists worry about insect bites in Barcelona?
Barcelona’s warm summer weather makes it a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes and other insects. While most bites are harmless and go away in a few days, some can lead to complications — especially for travelers with sensitive skin, allergies, or underlying conditions.
As a doctor, I often treat tourists who assumed their skin reaction was “just a bite”, only to discover it was infected, allergic, or even caused by something else entirely.
What are warning signs your bug bite isn’t normal?
Some redness and itching are to be expected. But if you notice any of the following, it’s time to seek medical attention:
- The area is very swollen, painful, or warm to the touch
- You develop a fever or chills
- The redness spreads or you see streaking
- There's pus, blistering, or a hard lump under the skin
These could be signs of infection, cellulitis, or an allergic reaction that requires treatment — not just a soothing cream.
Can bites cause allergic reactions or infections?
Yes. People with insect bite allergies (including to mosquito saliva) can develop large, itchy welts that take weeks to fade. In other cases, bacteria can enter through broken skin, leading to infections that worsen quickly in the heat.
Self-treating with over-the-counter creams might mask symptoms without solving the problem. If your reaction is spreading or painful, get it assessed by a professional.
What should you do if you get a bad bite while on holiday?
Clean the area with soap and water, avoid scratching, and apply a cold compress. Antihistamines can help with itching. But if the bite becomes inflamed or painful, don’t wait.
You can send us a photo of the affected area for a quick online assessment, or request a consultation at your hotel. We’ll help you understand if it’s a mild irritation — or something more serious.
